Twitter can be used as an excellent tool when it comes to building your brand and communicating to your audience. However, if your Twitter account lacks followers, your messages will ultimately serve no purpose. It is important to gain followers who are interested in your brand and your message, and who will take time to read your posts content. Doing this can be a challenge for most people who are just getting started in the Twitter-sphere.
Following a large amount of profiles just to gain followers is tricky and probably not the path you and your business should take. Conducting a mass follow can easily result in followers who don’t care about your brand or your message. Even worse, you could be attracting marketers and spammers who will do nothing for your brand. Even if you were to just follow users who are likely to follow you back, there is no guarantee and this process could take quite a while.
An alternate route, and probably the best method to use, would be to use a targeted follow strategy. Following profiles with similar ideas and interests as you and your company would provide a strong base of followers who are extremely likely to follow you back, especially if the content you are posting is highly relatable for them. Using hashtags and mentioning brands also increases your chance at gaining a strong following for your profile.
Rich Brooks from the Social Media Examiner posted an article with excellent tips to grow a following for your brand that actually matters. He provides a strong insight, saying that “it’s not how many followers you have, but how many relevant followers you have”. He provides four tips in his article:
1. Find and follow relevant people.
Brooks suggests starting out by making sure you have a strong profile. This includes your picture, bio and location. When people know exactly who they are following, it creates a stronger awareness and relationship. Brooks also mentions online third-party tools such as WeFollow to discover people to follow by searching an array of interests.
2. Tweet interesting stuff.
People are going to be more likely to relate and be interested in following your brand if they are intrigued by your posts. Using tools such as Google Alerts to get notified on what your audience is interested in would greatly impact the power of your tweets. Also, it is important to share media. People are highly attracted to photos and videos with relatable content.
3. Engage with your audience.
Solely posting content on your brands behalf is great and informative, but actually conversing with your followers will give you a stronger following. When people are replied to from a brand, it creates excitement and proves that you are engaging in the conversation. The reaction that your followers will have to your engagement will also attract more followers who will be getting in line to follow you. Brooks suggests scheduling chats to have with your audience to enhance the engagement you provide with them.
4. Promote your Twitter account through other channels.
When searching for a particular brand, people normally gravitate to that companies website. By having clickable links on your website and other online media outlets, your audience will be able to easily find your social media accounts. Doing this will ensure that the followers you gain from this will be invested in the content you post. QR codes are also an easy way to bring followers directly to your account.
